Ayurveda's Simple Method of Controlling Anxiety Attack

?

How can we Control Anxiety Attack?

Competition, demands, pressure and many more things lead to anxiety attack, which we tend to ignore due to time limitation. We expose ourselves to noise, traffic, music and other types of pollution, which stimulates our brain and increases anxiousness.

'Game of Thrones' plays off real-life sword science

Get an inside look at the weapons created for the new season of HBO's "Game of Thrones" series.

By Alan Boyle

All swords are not created equal, particularly when it comes to "Game of Thrones," the HBO series based on George R.R. Martin's character-rich sword-and-sorcery saga. When the series opens its second series on Sunday, some of the swords you'll see are made of cheap resin, others are metal blades just meant to look good ? and a few of them have been custom-crafted using a technique reminiscent of the story's fictional, magic-laden Valyrian steel.

For Martin, swords are serious business.

"The one thing I can say is that he is very, very knowledgeable about history, including weaponry," said Chris Beasley, the proprietor of Valyrian Steel, the Michigan-based company that produces licensed replicas of "Game of Thrones" swords. "When designing the swords, and he is highly involved in the design process of our book replicas, he doesn't want something to look cool. He is more concerned with realism ? who made it, why, and how?"

For example, let's talk about Valyrian steel. In the "Game of Thrones" TV series and Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" book series, the Valyrian blades were created ages earlier by a vanished civilization, using a blend of alloys forged with magic spells. There's actually a real-life analog, minus the magic, known as Damascus steel. Damascus swords are famous for their resilience and the intricate, flowing patterns that are imprinted on the blades, but the secret of their forging has been lost for centuries.

A few years ago, researchers found that at the microscopic level, Damascus steel contains carbon nanotubes ? structures that seem like 21st-century technological magic dropped into the 17th century. The super-strong nanostructures are mixed in with softer metal in the sword. That solves the classic dilemma of sword-making: how to make a blade that is hard enough to do damage, yet supple enough not to break.

HBO

Young King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) sits on an Iron Throne made from the swords of enemies.

Modern-day Valyrian steel
Today, swordsmiths use a process known as "pattern welding" that produces results similar to the lost art of Damascus steel. Multiple layers of steel, with different amounts of carbon and other elements, are forge-welded together to create a blade that combines strength and suppleness. When all the layers of metal are flattened and folded together, over and over, it's like having two blades ? or, more accurately, 200 blades ? in one.

Some of the best-known Valyrian blades seen in the "Game of Thrones" TV series, such as the swords nicknamed Ice and Longclaw, were made using the pattern-welding technique.

"Ice was the main weapon to get right," Tommy Dunne, the weaponmaster for the series, said in a Westeros.org interview. "From the concept to the construction, it was about three weeks to make, as the blade was hand-forged by pattern welding, and the blade was drawn using machine hammers. But as with any good weapons, there's some other secrets that will remain secret!"

Beasley's business also sells some swords made with pattern-welded steel. "Those could technically be used, but we never recommend it," he told me. "Our swords are limited-edition collectibles, and no sword is impervious to damage. If used, they will get nicks, and chips, and scratches."

Beasley recalls that Valyrian Steel's Longclaw replica originally sold for $600, but after the swords were sold out, one customer reported receiving an offer of $3,000 to $4,000 for his sword. "I wouldn't recommend that anyone risk damage to something so valuable," Beasley told me.

Needle at work
If real fake Valyrian steel is too expensive for your taste, you can shell out $170 for Needle, the kid-sized sword that 9-year-old Arya Stark learns to uses with deadly effect in "Game of Thrones." Beasley said Martin had a hand in designing the replica.

"Reading the books, I and many others thought, 'OK, this is a small rapier,'" Beasley recalled. "George very quickly put that notion to rest. He said that Mikken, the Winterfell smith who made it, would never have seen a rapier in his life, so how could he make one? That is why the book version of needle is more or less a small, slim longsword, and not a rapier."

Martin was so pleased with the result that he had one of Valyrian Steel's Needles sent to the actress who plays Arya so she could practice with it. And she's not the only one.

"One customer did tell us that they use Needle in their offhand to increase strength and coordination," Beasley told me. "They keep it in their office, and when on the phone or otherwise occupied they just jab and thrust with their left hand." (Remind me not to burst into that office unexpectedly.)

New twists in an old trade
Some of the secrets from the golden age of swordsmithing may have been lost over the past few centuries, but technology is adding new twists to the trade. There's been a lot of research into the use of alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, chromium, nickel, titanium and molybdenum. Materials scientists also are developing metallic materials infused with carbon nanotubes, just like in the good old days of Damascus steel.

"In more modern times, steel can be precisely made, and the overall material creation process can be more scientific so that you can get precisely the steel with the hardness and flexibility you desire," Beasley said. "So materials science has probably made modern swords stronger than older ones, but construction methods have not changed ? though, obviously, power tools and other equipment have replaced arm power."

Ah, power tools ? I'll bet the swordsmiths of King's Landing would have shelled out hundreds of silver stags for a good belt grinder. Are you in a mood to geek out over the science and technology of "Game of Thrones"? Feel free to indulge yourself in the comment section.

[News] Fez Coming To XBLA April 13th!

Polytron has recently announced on their site that Fez is on its way to XBLA Friday, April 13th. With all the delays this game has ?gotten, it?s good to finally see a concrete date. It seems like a unique puzzle platformer akin to Super Paper Mario and Echochrome. 2D/3D platforming with cute animations and a fez? Perfect. Fez was also one of the indie games highlighted in Indie Game: The Movie.

About the author

Yamilia Avendano here, the executive editor around these parts. I started gaming when I was old enough to hold a controller. My first systems were the NES/SNES/Sega Genesis. Since then, my passion for video games has been like a snowball effect. Games are art, suck it Ebert. I'm a huge supporter of indie developers so if you are one/ know one, holla at meh and I'll write about how amazing you are. When not playing games I can be found painting silly things, getting my bachelors in advertising, or being amazing around the beautiful Miami. I've worked for many gaming news sites before finding my home with the amazing staff at Twinfinite. The gaming community is too negative as a whole, I'm here to brighten it up. Favorite Games: This is always the most impossible question for me, way too many. But since I replay FFVIII at least twice a year, let's go with that as number one.

Falls Prevention Is Important To Your Business ? Ross Joyner ...

It is easy to underestimate the risk of accidents in the workplace. People can easily overlook what poses a trip hazard while some people even simply laugh off how dangerous slips can be. However, slips, trips and fall accidents actually account for well over half of all major workplace injuries every single year and this startling statistic simply cannot be argued. The simple fact is that slips and trips are highly dangerous yet they are also, in the most part, completely avoidable by simply following some simple rules.

It is statistics such as this that make it clear how important it is as a business to make sure that you receive adequate training on how to avoid these types of simple accidents. These are important as they allow you and your staff the ability to have a workplace that is safe and secure to work in. This means that you can of course avoid the pain and anguish that a serious trip or fall can bring, but from a business perspective it also means that you can effectively save money.

Slips and trips cause serious time off of work that cost you and your business money in sick pay and can cause other indirect costs such as lost business and reduced output. Not only that, but of course there is the chance of being sued or having to assist or even completely pay for treatment and assistance. It can also be bad for public relations and of course as an employer you have a duty of care in the first place so ethically it is important that you do everything possible to avoid these sorts of accidents as well.

Many employers believe training is confusing, expensive and too time consuming. However, there are a number of companies that will come to your office or place or work and teach you and/or your staff about the basics of health and safety and avoiding trips and falls. This training is highly cost effective, and when weighed up with the potential costs described above, can quickly become invaluable. The truth is that some training can be as quick as just twenty minutes as well, meaning minimum fuss and disruption to you business. After this training, it is simply a case of making sure that you and employees practice what was learnt to see instant and dramatic improvements in the level of health and safety.

So, the question really is can you afford NOT to have this type of training?!

iHASCO offers a range of programmes that deal with health and safety issues. The programmes offered are truly interactive, enjoyable and knowledge-packed. They allow you, your team and your business to benefit from advanced health and safety training which will make your workplace safer and more enjoyable to work in.

Geothermal Heating and Cooling Saves Money and the Earth

One of the most important aspects of any home is the comfort it provides. This comfort level has nothing to do with how great the sectional sofa or kingside bed feel. However, it has everything to do the temperature. Being able to feel cool air during the summer and hot air during the winter is a vital part of everyone's home. That's why some people will spend whatever it takes to make sure they are able to tolerate the changing weather. In many cases people become tired of the high costs and inefficiency of the air conditioning and heating units. The good news is there is an effective alternative called geothermal heating and cooling.

This alternative uses the earth as a natural heating and cooling source, unlike the more widely popular option. Because of its environmentally friendly component, it is extremely attractive to those who care about saving and conserving the Earth as much as possible. By providing a source of renewable energy, harmful chemicals aren't being emitted into the Earth's atmosphere. Instead, natural energy from the Earth's surface is constantly being renewed.

Besides being the most "green" way to heat and cool a home, geothermal heating and cooling saves its users a lot of money. Although it may initially cost more to install, it doesn't take customers long to start seeing the monetary benefits. This is mostly realized when they look at their monthly bills. The monthly cost to use this energy efficient alternative is significantly less than the common and more widely used option. For this reason alone, many people quickly consider this choice.

Another benefit of the geothermal heating and cooling unit is the fact that is requires much less maintenance. This is because all of the system's components are stored indoors, unlike the traditional unit that is placed outside. Because the unit is inside, it isn't exposed to the everyday wear and tear that is provided by the many environmental factors that take place outdoors.

Geothermal heating and cooling is not just something beneficial to those who consider themselves environmentally friendly or for those who want to save money. In actuality, everyone benefits from anything that will help to preserve and conserve the Earth's natural resources. So, this form of heating and cooling is more than just a fad or another new option. However, it is something that should be seriously considered by more people.

Although the cost of the installation process may turn some people away, they must try to look at the bigger picture. Not only will they get repaid, by having a much cheaper bill every month, but they will be helping to make the Earth a better place for everyone.

Roshon Fegan Cheered By Britney Spears on Dancing With the Stars

Disney Channel standout Roshon Fegan tied Katherine Jenkins for the top spot on Dancing With the Stars this week with 26 points, edging William Levy's 25.

Cuban soap star Levy may have the catcall crown locked up, but Roshon earned the distinction of having a world renowned singer cheer him on backstage.

Britney Spears herself is apparently his #1 fan. Why?

"Her fiance [agent Jason Trawick] is a great friend of mine and a great fan of mine and has worked with me on some music stuff in the past," Roshon says.

"He came to check out the show, and was like 'I am going to bring my fiancée.' I was like, that's cool ... he forgot to mention that it was Britney Spears."

"It was unbelievable. What a crazy experience, just to have her looking at me out there, she could've been watching it on TV, but she was actually there."

She wasn't disappointed, either, based on Roshon's moves above. He and partner Chelsie Hightower look poised for a long run in DWTS' 14th season.

Glowing reviews as NASA launches 5 rockets

NASA launched a barrage of small rockets early Tuesday, with five rockets blasting off within five minutes to create glowing clouds at the edge of space that wowed skywatchers all along the U.S. East Coast.

The rocket launches capped nearly a week of vexing delays for NASA's Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment, or ATREX. The five suborbital rockets launched to the edge of space more than 60 miles (97 kilometers) above Earth and released a chemical tracer known as trimethyl aluminum.

Eerie snapshots from a quintuple space launch

Each of the rockets released the tracer, which created milky, white clouds at the edge of space," NASA said in a statement. "The launches and clouds were reported to be seen from as far south as Wilmington, N.C.; west to Charlestown, W.Va.; and north to Buffalo, N.Y."

Tuesday's launches occurred at 4:58 a.m. EDT ? near the end of the day's launch window ? with each rocket launching 80 seconds after the one before it. The mission is aimed at understanding the ultra-fast jet stream winds that can reach speeds of up to 300 mph (483 kph). The chemical tracers released allowed scientists to track those winds. [Skywatcher Photos: Glowing clouds at edge of space]

The launches followed repeated delays due to bad weather, a wayward boat in the launch range and a technical glitch, which forced the mission to postpone its initial March 14 liftoff target. But braving the delays for a chance to glimpse glowing clouds near space was worth it, skywatchers said.

Astrophotographer Jeff Berkes caught spectacular views of the ATREX clouds from outside Philadelphia, Pa. In his images, the clouds look like a huge, iridescent creature with wings spread across the predawn sky.

"It was a great show," Berkes told Space.com in an email.

The $4 million ATREX mission is aimed at better understanding the high-altitude jet stream, which streaks along at altitudes of 60 to 65 miles (97 to 105 km) ? much higher up than the jet stream commonly referred to in weather forecasts, which is found just 6 miles (10 km) or so above Earth. Theory suggests that this high-altitude jet stream should blow at only about 50 mph (80 kph), but in truth the average speed is closer to 200 mph and occasionally hits 300 mph, researchers have said.

To conduct the ATREX experiment, NASA used small sounding rockets capable of reaching suborbital heights, but not powerful enough to completely enter orbit and circle the Earth. Observing stations in Tuckerton, N.J.; Duck, N.C.; and the Wallops Island launch site were posistioned to record the results.

The outcome, skywatchers said, was amazing.

In Seaside Park, N.J., skywatcher and photographer Jack Fusco snapped an eye-catching view of the eerie clouds from a dark beach, with the Milky Way serving as a backdrop.

"It was well worth a few sleepless nights and ending up in the freezing, windy conditions to catch this view," Fusco told Space.com in an email.

(AP) ? At the beginning of the school year, gay pride events at a military academy with titles like "condom Olympics" and "queer prom" would have been unthinkable. This week, they're a reality.

Cadets in uniform at Norwich University, the nation's oldest private military academy, participated Monday in sessions about handling bullying and harassment as part of the school's first gay pride week. The events are believed to be the first of their kind on a military campus.

Just over six months after the end of the "don't ask, don't tell" rule that prohibited gays and lesbians from serving openly in the armed forces, it's a different ? and less secretive ? world.

Until last year, only a select few at Norwich knew of the sexual orientation of Joshua Fontanez, 22, of Browns Mills, N.J., a past president of the student government who quietly laid the groundwork for the school's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning and Allies Club, which held its first meeting the day the law ended.

He had always wanted to be a soldier but figured he'd have to keep his sexuality a secret.

"The aspects of my sexual orientation, how that played in the military, that was something I was willing to sacrifice, being open versus serving my nation," Fontanez said. "It's something I feel I was truly called toward and truly loved, so it's great that I don't have necessarily to make that sacrifice."

In December, a group of students at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., formed a group called Spectrum, which has many of the same goals as the Norwich club. A similar organization with the same name is being formed in New York at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

For many of the newly open student leaders, the changes brought by the end of "don't ask, don't tell" haven't overwhelmed, despite the years-long political wrangling that culminated in the policy change.

"It was definitely a big change, but it happened over such a long period of time for me that it didn't seem like that big of a deal," said Coast Guard Academy Senior Chip Hall, 21, of Monterrey, Calif.

The West Point Spectrum, modeled after the Coast Guard organization, is being formed with little fanfare.

"Everyone has been very professional here at the academy," said West Point Cadet Andrew Fitzsimmons, 19, a sophomore from Algonac, Mich. "It's been a very positive environment."

A group of alumni called Knights Out will hold a campus dinner this weekend and is expecting at least a dozen cadets to attend, said the group's director, Sue Fulton, a 1980 West Point graduate who was among the first women admitted to the academy.

"The official status has changed dramatically, in that public events that would have been prohibited are happening; but in terms of attitudes, I think cadets and midshipmen have long been supportive of their gay and lesbian classmates," Fulton said.

Norwich, established in 1819, has about 1,300 cadets and 1,100 civilian students. About 115 of the 200 graduating cadets plan to be commissioned in the armed forces through ROTC.

The gay student club is believed to be the first of its kind in the country on a military campus, Norwich officials said. Thirty to 35 people attend meetings.

The events this week ? held at a different time of year from many other gay pride events, which usually are observed in June or October ? include discussions of HIV testing; the "condom Olympics," in which prophylactics are given as prizes; and a dance at which same-sex partners are welcome.

As an institution, Norwich never banned open homosexuality in the corps of cadets, but because many of its students were destined for the military, which prior to the end of "don't ask don't tell" the law served to keep people quiet, said Norwich spokeswoman Daphne Larkin.

Some members of Norwich's Christian Fellowship have been uncomfortable with gay student club, but the two organizations have worked together, with members of each attending some of the other's meetings, said biology emeritus professor Carlos Pinkham, the Christian group's faculty adviser.

"We make it clear to them that we use the bible as our guide and that as a result we can't condone the stuff they do," Pinkham said. "But the Bible is also equally clear, in fact, even more clear. ... Being judgmental about the sin without extending love to the sinner is another form of sin."

The groups are a consequence of changing times, said Norwich Vice President Michael Kelley, a 1974 graduate who spent 27 years in the military before returning to academia. He noted the school was among the first to allow female cadets.

"It's saying that we as a military community are looking to more to the future, that we're not quibbling about the past, what was or what wasn't," he said, "that we can take a leadership role to help move our students to a more enlightened future."

HP Combines Printers And PC Divisions Into The Printing and Personal Systems Group

wonderhp1HP announced today that the two of the company's largest divisions will be combined into one, if you will, super division. The Imaging and Printing Group (IPG) and Personal Systems Group (PSG) are joining together to be called The Printing and Personal Systems Group. This is a long time coming. As the press release mentions, the driving force behind the change is to improve performance and increase profits. Both groups are suffering from the move to the post-PC era. HP almost spun off the PSG in the middle of 2011 and printer and ink sales are dipping down. The two groups are separately vulnerable, but together, they can pool resources and hopefully survive in this brave new world.
