3-D movies linked to increased vision symptoms

ScienceDaily (July 2, 2012) ? Watching 3D movies can "immerse" you in the experience -- but can also lead to visual symptoms and even motion sickness, reports a study -- "Stereoscopic Viewing and Reported Perceived Immersion and Symptoms," in the July issue of Optometry and Vision Science, official journal of the American Academy of Optometry.

The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health.

Symptoms related to 3D viewing are affected by where you sit while watching, and even how old you are. "Younger viewers incurred higher immersion but also greater visual and motion sickness symptoms in 3D viewing," according to the authors, led by Shun-nan Yang, PhD, of Pacific University College of Optometry, Forest Grove, Ore. "Both [problems] will be reduced if a farther distance and a wider viewing angle are adopted."

Greater 'Immersion' in 3D Also Associated With Increased Symptoms

The researchers performed experiments in which adults, from young adult to middle-aged, were invited to watch a movie (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) in 2D or 3D while sitting at different angles and distances. Visual and other symptoms were assessed -- including the role of factors including age, seating position, and level of "immersion" in the movie.

Twenty-one percent of participants reported symptoms while watching the movie in 3D, compared to twelve percent with 2D viewing. For younger study participants blurred vision, double vision, dizziness, disorientation, and nausea were all more frequent and severe when watching the movie in 3D.

3D viewing also led to a greater sense of immersion -- "a greater sense of object motion and motion of the viewer in space" -- compared to 2D viewing. Subjects sitting in more central or closer positions reported greater immersion as well as increased symptoms of motion sickness -- that is, nausea. Sitting at an angle to the screen was associated with less immersion as well as reduced motion symptoms.

There were some differences by age, including a lower rate of blurred vision in older viewers (age 46 and older). Older viewers had more visual and motion sickness symptoms in 2D viewing, while younger viewers (age 24 to 34) had more symptoms in 3D viewing. The same age-related changes leading to lower rates of blurred vision in older viewers may also explain their lower rates of symptoms during 3D vision.

As 3D movies become more common, including on home screens, there are reports of visual and other symptoms among 3D viewers. Vision and orientation symptoms related to 3D viewing may be related to a "mismatch" between focusing and converging the eyes. Anthony Adams, OD, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of Optometry and Vision Science notes "the technology for reducing mismatch between where the eyes converge and where they focus is likely to improve rapidly."

The study identifies several factors associated with symptoms during 3D viewing. "3D viewing is quite specific in causing blurred vision and double vision, and the resultant symptoms are greater for younger adults," Dr Yang and colleagues write. 3D produces a greater sense of immersion than 2D viewing, which leads to more symptoms of motion sickness -- especially for younger adults and when viewing from a closer distance and a more direct angle.

The study will help optometrists and other eye care professionals in talking to patients about visual and other symptoms related to today's sophisticated 3D video setups.

Scouts from fire-ravaged town die in Wyo. crash

Five people died when a vehicle returning to Colorado from a Boy Scout camp in Wyoming slammed head-on into a motor home, authorities said Sunday.

Among the victims were three Scouts and their adult troop leader, all from Woodland Park, Colo., a town ravaged in recent weeks by wildfires, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported. A 3-year-old passenger in the motor home also died, the Wyoming Highway Patrol said.

Four others were injured in the crash on Highway 120 on Saturday near Thermopolis in north-central Wyoming. Their conditions were not immediately known.

The Boy Scouts were traveling in a Honda Element, which was one of three vehicles taking a group of Scouts back to the Colorado Springs area. The two other vehicles transporting the Scouts were not involved in the crash.

The newspaper also reported Sunday that the local Boy Scouts council released a statement saying "yesterday was an extremely difficult day for the entire Scouting family."

The Highway Patrol declined to release any other information, including the names of the victims.

Hot Springs County Sheriff Lou Falgoust told The Billings (Mont.) Gazette the troop members were working toward their Eagle Scout badges and had been camping around an area known as Pahaska Teepee, near Yellowstone National Park.

Investigators are still trying to determine why the Honda crossed the center line.

97% Monsieur Lazhar

All Critics (93) | Top Critics (30) | Fresh (90) | Rotten (3) | DVD (1)

A gentle film can still be searing in its effect on an audience, something that "Monsieur Lazhar" proves emphatically.

With a few folds, this story could have made a script for John Barrymore, like Topaze, or for Chaplin.

A sad, reflective study of the possibilities, and the impossibilities, inherent in the teacher-student relationship.

"Monsieur Lazhar" is good. Really good.

The film is rich in naturalistic, tossed-off details.

A standard liberal tale about an inspirational teacher gradually deepens into a quiet study of how grief works its way through a community.

Falardeau's adaptation of fellow Qu?b?cois Evelyne de la Cheneli?re's play honours the power of the written word (a motif reinforced throughout the film), and expands on its stage origins via remarkably-assured cinematic touches.

Falardeau dances delicately along the razor's edge of the familiar and the conventional. But he does so with tact and taste and just the right blend of tension and relief.

This moving film features exquisite performances by Fellag and a stunning ensemble of child actors. The movie also gets high marks in cinematography, sound, original musical score and editing.

Although it raises timeless questions about life and loss, and timely ones about mentorship and multiculturalism, "Monsieur Lazhar" would rather teach than preach.

... the perfect school drama for people who hate the Hollywood version of the genre, but are open to simple and moving stories about people doing the best they can in a world that doesn't always seem to encourage that approach.

A humanistic story about how tragedy has different effects on people.

a naturalistic ensemble drama about the possibilities - and the limitations - of the teacher-pupil relationship ... probably too low-key for mainstream multiplex tastes, Monsieur Lazhar is a temperate, generous and deeply affecting experience.

As the teacher, Fellag suggests Robert Downey Jr. channeling a quietly reflective Robert De Niro.

This is a good movie about teaching, but more importantly, a good movie about the loss of a loved one and how to cope with death.

There's a lighthearted inspiration infused throughout Monsieur Lazhar that makes it also touching, but never maudlin.

Everything about the film sets exactly the right tone, from the unforced and winning performances by the main children to the wintry cinematography to Fellag's quietly rueful performance.

The rare sort of movie that chooses not to focus on the dramatic, pivotal moments that happen in life, but what comes after.

One of the most touching films of the year. A brilliant tragedy that transcends boundaries of age, country, race, religion and gender.

tender and sincere, frequently striking a fine balance between the dictates of the "inspirational teacher" genre and a more mundane kind of realism that tamps down easy sentimentality and strives for something more organic and genuine

Takes the fairly dreadful 'teacher who makes a difference' sub-genre and puts an interesting new spin on it that gives it the allure of something fresh.

Some teachers will learn from it. All teachers will find it a reaffirmation of their vocation.

Impressively directed and superbly written, this is an emotionally engaging, deservedly Oscar-nominated drama with a terrific central performance from Mohamed Sa?d Fellag.

Rizzo's first HR lifts Cubs past Astros

By RICK GANO

CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Rizzo's arrival in Chicago has generated hype throughout the city. It's also given a last-place team such as the Cubs an encouraging glimpse of the future.

Rizzo hit his first homer in a Cubs uniform Saturday, a two-run, go-ahead shot to spark a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros. He now has two game-winning hits in four games and Chicago is 3-1 since he joined the team.

"It's good to come into a new clubhouse and produce like that and help the team win," said Rizzo, who also made a nice play in the field to cut down a run. "It's a lot of fun when you do that. It's just good to win."

Matt Garza (4-6) struggled but got the victory by working 5 1-3 innings. Five Cubs relievers combined to allow one hit and no runs over the final 3 2-3 innings with Carlos Marmol pitching the ninth for his seventh save in nine chances.

Rizzo has worked to shorten up his swing since spring training and put up impressive numbers at Triple-A. And his homer Saturday - the second of his career after hitting one with the Padres last season - came off a left-hander in J.A. Happ.

"That's another thing I worked on hard this year, hitting lefties and I feel comfortable if it's a lefty or righty," he said.

Said Garza: "He's going a great job producing and doing what he does."

"Let the guy enjoy it," he said. "Let him enjoy his ride."

Happ (6-8) allowed five hits, four walks and three runs in six innings. But the former Northwestern University pitcher is winless in his past 11 road decisions dating to May 3, 2011.

"It's frustrating. It was a walk, a bloop and a blast, then a loss," Happ said. "It's tough taking that, but other than that I felt good out there."

Veteran Astros first baseman Carlos Lee, the subject of trade rumors involving the Los Angeles Dodgers, went 0 for 4. He said after the game he would talk to his wife about whether to accept the move.

"Probably tomorrow I'll let you know," Lee said after the game. "Because I don't want to go through this. Either I'm going or I'm not."

Rizzo's long and high drive to right field scored Starlin Castro for a 3-2 lead. Moments earlier, Castro had hit a two-out RBI single for Chicago's first run.

Garza labored on the 92-degree afternoon but was backed by three double plays and some overly aggressive baserunning by the Astros. He gave up two runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings and threw 104 pitches with three walks. Scott Maine relieved him in the sixth and gave up a single to Jason Castro, but Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano made a strong throw to get Chris Johnson trying to make third on the hit.

A leadoff single by J.D. Martinez, a double by Scott Moore and a single by Jordan Schafer gave the Astros a 1-0 lead in the third. But a big inning was averted when Rizzo fielded Jed Lowrie's grounder to first base and made a strong throw to the plate to easily nail Moore.

"That's my go-to place," Rizzo said. "Hitting's going to come and go but fielding's going to be the consistent thing I pride myself on all the time. That's where I go to."

Martinez hit a two-out RBI single in the fourth, right after the Cubs had turned a 5-3 double play with two runners on. But he was caught off second after initially heading for third on Moore's single and was tagged out to end the inning.

"I'm not exactly sure what J.D. was doing. C.J., I don't really mind as much, he was trying to bust his tail to get to third with one out with Soriano, who's known not to have the best arm around, and he was going to his left," Astros manager Brad Mills said. "I'm not exactly sure what happened to J.D. because he was halfway to third and he stopped."

Lowrie saved a run in the fourth with a great stop on Darwin Barney's hard two-out grounder to shortstop, shoveling it backhanded to second baseman Moore for the out.

Marlins?top Phillies 6-2, keep Cliff Lee winless

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:38 p.m. ET June 29, 2012

MIAMI (AP) - With the way he's pitching these days, Josh Johnson needs very little run support.

Johnson (5-5) pitched six strong innings to help the Miami Marlins win consecutive games for the first time in nearly a month and keep Cliff Lee winless with a 6-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

Johnson wrapped up June with a 2-2 record and 1.87 ERA in five starts.

"He's our ace for a reason," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said.

Johnson (5-5) allowed one run and four hits while striking out six. He threw 69 of 108 pitches for strikes.

"This month wasn't the best pitching-wise, but someone had to step up and try to help the bullpen out a little bit," Johnson said.

Justin Ruggiano tied a career high with three hits and drove in two runs for Miami, which last won consecutive games June 2-3 at Philadelphia. The Marlins were 4-17 since.

"I didn't think we had back-to-back wins since spring training," Guillen said. "It seems like we're coming around little by little."

Lee (0-5) allowed six runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings, falling to 0-2 with a 7.30 ERA in his last four starts.

"It was just weird," Lee said. "It seemed everything they hit went between third and short. They got a lot of hits. It was one of those nights. I can't really explain it."

Hunter Pence homered for the Phillies, who played for the first time at the new Marlins Park.

"Nice, real nice," said Phillies left fielder Juan Pierre, a former Marlin. "They did a real good job with it. The fans are in here and it's loud, that's for sure. Miami deserves to have a stadium."

It was Ruggiano's first three-hit game since June 12, 2011, at Baltimore while with Tampa Bay, and the third of his career.

"He rakes," Johnson said. "We were talking about it after his third hit, he never stops hitting."

Jose Reyes doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning for the Marlins and scored on a groundout by Logan Morrison.

"When you jump up 1-0 with J.J. on the mound, it is a different ballgame," Guillen said.

The Marlins strung together four straight hits in the third including an RBI single by Giancarlo Stanton. Omar Infante's sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 3-0.

Pence cut the deficit to 3-1 with his 15th homer over the right-field fence.

"Johnson was good tonight," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "Johnson's a good pitcher. Give him credit, too, but at the same time, we scored one run off him and we didn't play well enough to win."

Ruggiano's two-run double followed by John Buck's RBI single ended Lee's outing.

"Anytime you can get a couple runs extra on the board, it allows everyone to relax a little bit and take a breath," Ruggiano said.

Pence added an RBI single in the ninth.

NOTES: Ruggiano leads the Marlins with a .396 batting average (19 for 48) in June. ... Pence is batting .462 (12 for 26) with three home runs and seven RBIs in seven games against the Marlins this season. .... Marlins RHP Edward Mujica took a grounder off his right foot in the seventh inning and will get an X-ray. ... Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (left Achilles) played in his first rehab game on Thursday with Single-A Lakewood and went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. ... Philadelphia will send LHP Cole Hamels (10-3, 3.03 ERA) to the mound on Saturday to face Marlins LHP Mark Buehrle (6-8, 3.55 ERA), who is 3-2 in five starts against the Phillies. Hamels is 6-9 in 21 starts against Miami.
