Galaxy Nexus case showdown - TPU vs. Silicone

We know a lot of folks out there want a flexible "skin" case for their Galaxy Nexus. We also know that with so many available, it's often hard to figure out which one is the best. Luckily, you've got AC and Raul to help make the decision easier. Raul dives in and compares the Cruzerlite Androidified TPU case against the CaseMate Droid Creature case -- two very popular choices.

Check out the video and see Raul's comparison. We don't want to spoil the ending, but you can buy the winner right here. Thanks, Raul!

'Hunger Games' Director Gary Ross Circles 'Houdini'

After turning down 'Games' sequel 'Catching Fire,' 'The Secret Life of Houdini' may be next on Ross' plate.

"Hunger Games" fans were dismayed when director Gary Ross released a statement saying he wasn't going to helm the film's sequel, "Catching Fire." His previous works have been few and far between. Before adapting the dystopian novel, Ross directed "Pleasantville" in 1998 and "Seabiscuit" in 2003, and fans wondered if he would disappear off Hollywood's radar for a while. But Ross' next project might happen sooner rather than later.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ross is in talks with Summit to direct "Houdini," an adaptation of the book "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero" by William Kalush and Larry Sloman. While recounting the master escape artist's life from poverty to fame, the biography suggests that the magician who commanded the attention of countless audiences worked as a spy for Britain and the Secret Service.

In Lionsgate's own statement on Gary Ross' departure from "The Hunger Games" franchise, they wrote, "[Gary Ross] did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work. This will not be the end of our relationship, as we consider Ross to be part of the Lionsgate family and look forward to working with him in the future."

Since Lionsgate bought Summit earlier this year, it's quite possible this is the other project they had in mind for the director. THR also reports that Summit optioned the rights to the book back in March of 2009 and their goal is to turn it into an action franchise in the same vein as "Indiana Jones" and "Sherlock Holmes." Noah Oppenheim already wrote the script, but having penned every screenplay he's directed, it's possible Ross may want to edit or re-write it if he signs on for the project.

Coincidentally, THR notes that Francis Lawrence, the director who signed on for "Catching Fire," is attached to his own Houdini venture for Columbia Pictures.

MIT and Harvard announce edX web education platform, make online learning cheap and easy

Image

We'll forgive you if you failed to take MIT up on its offer take its courses for free when it rolled out its MITx online learning platform last year. However, Harvard took notice of its efforts, and has joined MIT online to form the edX platform and offer courses and content for free on the web. There's no word on the available subjects just yet, but video lessons, quizzes and online labs will all be a part of the curriculum, and those who comprehend the coursework can get a certificate of mastery upon completion. edX won't just benefit those who log on, either, as it'll be used to research how students learn and how technology can be used to improve teaching in both virtual and brick and mortar classrooms. The cost for this altruistic educational venture? 60 million dollars, with each party ponying up half. The first courses will be announced this summer, and classes are slated to start this fall. Want to know more? Check out the future of higher education more fully in the PR and video after the break.

Dell spreads the Ivy Bridge love to new XPS 8500, Vostro 470 PCs (video)

Image

Not willing to let the new Alienware lineup have all the fun with Intel's Ivy Bridge rollout, Dell has seen fit to trot out a pair of new desktop systems using the new 22-nanometer chips. The XPS 8500 is arguably the center of attention here and comes with your pick of the third-generation, quad-core i5 or i7 processors, along with a new choice for a 32GB or 256GB solid-state drive to cut down on those pesky loading times. The more sober-minded among us can opt for the Vostro 470 business desktop, which skips over the raw video prowess of its rebellious XPS cousin in favor of supporting up to 32GB of RAM, not to mention stacking up the extra security and support that makes IT administrators happy. Should you want to take the plunge, $750 will get you into the XPS 8500 fold, while $550 is all it takes for the Vostro 470 line. Head in past the break for a video peep at both PCs.

Comcast earnings beat expectations for Q1

ImageLooks like it's time for a little endzone celebration in the City of Brotherly Love this week. Comcast issued its earnings, and things are looking up, marking a 30 percent profit increase for the first quarter. Revenue for the cable company is at $14.9 billion, beating out analyst estimates of $14.4 billion. The Associated Press chalks the happy results up to Super Bowl advertising and the popularity of the company's broadband offerings.

BlackBerry 10 developer toolkit released in beta, adds Native and WebWorks SDKs for app-building flexibility

Image

Will BlackBerry 10 be the hallowed OS that heals Waterloo's recent wounds or yet another RIM-shot to highlight its foibles? Only the fickle tide of consumer interest will certainly tell. But while the success and awareness of that new platform undoubtedly rests on the company's shoulders, a great deal of it also hinges upon crucial developer support. To spur things along in that latter department, RIM's released its developer toolkit in beta today. The tools, launched ahead of forthcoming BB 10 devices and the nascent ecosystem that they'll depend upon, are designed for flexibility, allowing third parties to choose between the Native SDK with its OS-specific APIs or the WebWorks SDK for HTML5 and CSS. The company's even gotten a head-start and partnered with the likes of Gameloft, which has already committed to optimizing 11 of its software titles for use on the platform. There's still a long road to US recovery ahead for the ailing BlackBerry brand, so let's hope this latest call-to-arms isn't lost on the dev community. Click on past the break for the official PR.
