Centenarian sister helps Sardinian siblings set world record

Nine Sardinians were recognized Wednesday as the oldest living siblings, with a combined age of 818. The eldest sister celebrated her 105th birthday today.

By Nick Squires,?Correspondent / August 22, 2012

Could the rugged Mediterranean island of Sardinia harbor the secret to a long life? Experts increasingly think so.

The island has long had a reputation for longevity, with one of the highest rates of centenarians in the world. Now that reputation has been further bolstered with the discovery of nine elderly brothers and sisters who have a combined age of 818 years.

The Melis siblings were officially recognized this week by Guinness World Records?as the world?s oldest living siblings.

It can surely only be a matter of time before ?The Sardinian Diet? becomes the next big thing among Hollywood stars and well-heeled health enthusiasts.

All but two of the siblings live in the village of Perdasdefogu in a mountainous region of the island known as the Barbagia, which in the past was famed for banditry, feuding, and kidnapping.

Its unforgiving terrain has repelled outside invaders since pre-Roman times, ensuring a distinct gene pool that appears to have passed on longevity from generation to generation.

The Melis family ascribes its extraordinarily long lives to plenty of exercise ? walking up and down precipitous slopes to feed its sheep and goats, for instance ? as well as a healthy diet based around bread, cheese and pasta, all locally produced. ?

Family members speak particularly highly of minestrone soup, which is filling but low in fat and full of greens. The red wine they drink is unusually high in antioxidants, experts have found.

Being surrounded by around 150 children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren also keeps them young, they say.

The oldest of the siblings, Consolata, celebrated her 105th birthday today, while the ?baby? of the family, Mafalda, is a comparatively sprightly 78 years old.

?In my day women had to do all the domestic work, going to the standpipe to get water and to the river to wash the clothes. My grandchildren have washing machines and vacuum cleaners so when they say 'I?m so stressed,' I just can?t understand it,? Consolata told Italy?s daily Corriere della Sera.

One of the sisters, Claudina, 99, keeps in shape by walking to and from church every day, while a brother, Adolfo, 89, still works in a bar in the village and tends vegetables in his garden.

It was a family friend who approached Guinness claiming that the Melis siblings were probably the oldest in the world.

Guinness verified the claim in conjunction with the Gerontology Research Group in the US and announced the finding this week.

?The Mediterranean lifestyle is always held up as being beneficial to a long, healthy life, and Italians in particular feature prominently in the list of supercentenarians and centenarians,? said Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief for Guinness World Records.

?Seven out of the 70 people alive over the age of 110 are Italian, for example, and the world's second-oldest living person is the Italy-born Dina Manfredini, who was born in Emilia-Romagna," Mr. Glenday noted, adding that Ms. Manfredini now lives in the US.

?With all longevity records, genes and lifestyle are paramount, but luck plays a big part ? avoiding accidents and falls, and so on ? so to have such a large number of living siblings with an average age of more than 90 years is incredibly rare.??

The secret of Sardinians? long life is being studied by a scientific project called AKeA ? an acronym for ?A kent? annos,? a traditional toast in the Sardinian language which means ?May you live to 100 years.?

Scientists believe genetics play a key role in Sardinians? longevity ? the same surnames crop up again and again in the list of long-living islanders, said Luca Deiana, a professor of clinical biochemistry from the University of Sassari.

The only other region in the world that can match Sardinia for the proportion of centenarians is the island of Okinawa in Japan.

Former U.Va. athlete gets 23 years for slaying ex

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) ? A former University of Virginia lacrosse player was sentenced Thursday to 23 years in prison for the alcohol-fueled beating death of his ex-girlfriend.

George W. Huguely V was sentenced for the slaying of Yeardley Love, a 22-year-old suburban Baltimore woman who was found face down in her blood-soaked pillow on May 3, 2010. Authorities said the 24-year-old defendant left his on-again, off-again girlfriend to die after he kicked a hole in her bedroom door and physically confronted her about their sputtering two-year relationship. Police said he had been drinking heavily that day.

A jury found the Chevy Chase, Md., man guilty in February of second-degree murder and grand larceny. The defense had asked for a 14-year sentence.

Circuit Judge Edward Hogshire reduced the jury's recommended sentence by three years.

"Unlike Miss Love, Mr. Huguely still has the majority of his life ahead of him," Hogshire said.

Before announcing the sentence, Hogshire asked the shackled defendant if he had anything to say to the court.

Huguely rose from the defense table and looked across the courtroom to Love's mother, Sharon Love, and tearfully said, "I'm so sorry for your loss." He also thanked family members for their support.

Huguely and Love, both seniors and varsity lacrosse players at U.Va., had a volatile relationship that spiraled into the deadly confrontation. In a police interrogation video played at his trial, Huguely admitted he and Love had a physical confrontation over their on-again, off-again two-year relationship. But he denied inflicting the fatal injuries Love suffered. He said she had banged her head against her bedroom wall.

A coroner concluded she died of blunt-force trauma.

California heatwaves to move toward coastal areas: Researchers reassess heatwaves against the backdrop of rising temperatures

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A new study by researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, suggests that the nature of California heatwaves is changing due to global warming.

Climate researchers Alexander Gershunov and Kristen Guirguis detected a trend toward more humid heatwaves that are expressed very strongly in elevated nighttime temperatures, a trend consistent with climate change projections. Moreover, relative to local warming, the mid-summer heatwaves are getting stronger in generally cooler coastal areas. This carries implications for the millions of Californians living near the ocean whose everyday lives are acclimated to moderate temperatures.

"Heatwaves are stressful rare extremes defined relative to average temperatures," said Gershunov. "We've known for a while that humid heatwaves that are particularly hot at night are on the rise in California as the climate warms. Here, we sharpen the geographic focus to consider sub-regions of the state."

Gershunov added that in this new sharper and "non-stationary" perspective, coastal heatwaves express much more intensely than those inland where the summertime mean warming is stronger. This translates to a variety of impacts on the typically cool, un-acclimated coast.

Classic California heatwaves have been characterized as interior desert and valley events that are hot during the day and marked by dryness and strong nighttime cooling. Gershunov and Guirguis said their analysis of observations and computer model data indicates that the emerging flavor of heatwaves marked by greater humidity, greater expression in nighttime temperatures, and greater expression in coastal areas relative to the generally cooler coast are intensifying and will keep intensifying in coming decades. Both coastal and desert heatwaves will continue to be more common as climate changes relative to the past, but the desert heatwaves are becoming less intense relative to strong average warming observed and projected for the interior of the state.

The study, "California heat waves in the present and future," will appear in the American Geophysical Union journal Geophysical Research Letters.

The "non-stationary" approach reflects an acknowledgment by scientists that what has been considered extreme heat is gradually becoming commonplace. The rate of climate warming necessitates a measure of extreme heat relative to the changing average climate rather than to historical climate norms. So, instead of defining heatwaves relative to fixed temperature thresholds, the researchers projected heatwave intensity against a backdrop of increasing average summertime temperature. This causes the definition of heatwaves -- temperatures in the warmest 5 percent of summertime conditions -- to evolve with the changing climate and reflect extreme conditions relevant to the climate of the time.

"The advantage of using this evolving 'non-stationary' definition is that heatwaves remain extreme events even under much warmer climate," said Gershunov. "If they change in this evolving framework, it's because the variance of temperature is changing, not just the average."

The authors point out that the trend could precipitate a variety of changes in California's coastal communities, where stronger heat will lead to the installation of air conditioners in homes traditionally not in need of cooling. This lifestyle trend would in turn affect energy demand in coastal areas, its magnitude and timing. In the absence of technological or physiological acclimatization, high humidity and the lingering of heat through the night is expected to have strong public health implications, placing added stress on many of the more than 21 million Californians who live in coastal counties. The same would be true for animals and plants living in the highly populated and diverse coastal zone.

"This trend has important human health implications for coastal California where most of the state's population lives," said Guirguis. "Coastal communities are acclimated to cooler mean temperatures and are not well prepared for extreme heat either physiologically or technologically through air conditioning use. Populations tend to adapt to changes in their average conditions but extreme events can catch people off guard. An increase in heat wave intensity relative to average conditions could mean much more heat-related illness during heat waves unless effective heat emergency plans are implemented."

Oreo the goat living outlaw's life in Tennessee

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) ? Not wanting to be the people who got Jeff Vlar's goat, city council members in a Tennessee city will consider an exemption for the animal.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/QSm47l) reports the issue is whether a black and white pigmy goat named Oreo can remain in East Ridge as Vlar's pet.

City Manager Tim Gobble says there's no question Oreo is cute. But he also says the city must either enforce its "no livestock" ordinance or find an alternative.

Jeff and Samantha Vlar say they didn't know keeping Oreo was against the law when they got him for their children a year ago.

Mayor Brent Lambert is sympathetic. He has kids, too ? the human kind ? and says the city is willing to look at a narrow exception for Oreo.

New GDP numbers do Obama no favors

American GDP grew a tepid 1.7 percent in the second quarter, suggesting a weak winter ahead.

Slightly stronger consumer spending and greater exports were the main reasons the Commerce Department reported Wednesday that growth was better than its initial estimate of 1.5 percent. Still, growth has slowed from the 2 percent annual rate in the January-March quarter and the 4.1 percent rate in the fourth quarter of 2011.

A weak economy and high unemployment could hurt President Barack Obama re-election chances in November and bolster Republican challenger Mitt Romney's campaign. Republicans are in Tampa, Florida, this week to formally nominate Romney and have pointed to the dismal growth in making the case to elect their candidate.

Economists expect only modest improvement in the second half of the year. Most believe the economy will keep growing, but at a subpar rate of around 2 percent.

"The economy was sluggish in the second quarter and the slight upward revision ... does nothing to change that picture," said John Ryding, an economist at RDQ Economics, in a note to clients.

The report was the government's second look at gross domestic product for the second quarter.?GDPmeasures the country's total output of goods and services, from the purchase of restaurant meals to construction of highways and bridges. A third and final estimate of second-quarter growth will be released next month.

Growth at or below 2 percent is not enough to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.3 percent in July. Most expect the unemployment rate to stay above 8 percent for the rest of this year.

A majority of Americans disapproves of how Obama is handling the economy, according to recent polls, which show that Romney has exploited those concerns and moved into a virtual tie in the race.

Economist Robert Brusca said the various changes in the second estimate should be positive for growth going forward. He noted more consumer demand in the spring than previously thought, which drives 70 percent of economic growth. And he pointed to less restocking of shelves, which suggests businesses could replenish their stockpiles in the current quarter. Faster inventory growth increases factory production, which boosts growth.

But Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said the small revision to second-quarter growth "offers little comfort."

"We are already two months through the third quarter and more up-to-date figures show that the economy is still struggling," Dales said.

Slow growth could prompt the Federal Reserve to take greater steps to boost the economy when policymakers meet again on Sept. 12-13. In late July, Fed policymakers spoke with increased urgency about the need to provide more help for a weak U.S. economy.

Chairman Ben Bernanke could offer some clues Friday to what the Fed might announce when he speaks at a Fed conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Some suspect the Fed will wait to see how the economy performed in August, especially after July's data was better than expected.

Employers created 163,000 jobs in July, the most since February. Consumers stepped up retail spending, factories produced more goods and the housing recovery continued with increases in both new and previously occupied homes.

The upward revision to second-quarter growth was largely because consumers spent at a slightly faster pace than first estimated. Consumer spending grew a 1.7 percent rate, better than the 1.5 percent initial estimated. Exports, which add to growth, were also stronger, growing at a 6 percent rate.

Government spending, which has been a drag on growth for the past two years, contracted again in the second quarter. But the decline at an annual rate of 0.9 percent was less than the initial estimated drop of 1.4 percent. That reflected a much smaller dip in defense spending than first estimated.

All of the changes boosted economic output by $6.5 billion more than previously estimated, leaving total?GDPat $13.56 trillion, after adjusting for inflation, in the second quarter.

How to decide on the alcohol treatment center that is right for you ...

When you realize one of your loved ones is suffering from alcohol addiction, your primary duty is to help them admit to their problem. Else the disease of alcoholism would ruin their lives as well as careers. If you fail to break their denial, seek help from a professional counselor. Intervention would help them find the right way to return to a sober life. Once the affected individual admits to their problem, the rest of the treatment process becomes easy to follow. The counselor will guide you through the entire course of treatment and even post-treatment remedy so that the transition is easy and permanent. You would be required to show commitment to your treatment course.

If the addiction is severe, the individual would be required to undergo detoxification at the alcohol treatment centers. Under detoxification, the body would be purged of alcoholic substances so that no toxic trace is left, which would further ensure smooth recovery for you. But detoxification is bound to result in withdrawal symptoms, which can be severe if the state of alcoholism is chronic. This would mean that you would be required to overcome this pain and withdrawal hoping for recovery from alcoholism. This way detoxification prepares you for the rest of the treatment process, which is not as severe as withdrawal. Counseling and guidance during detoxification ensure that the staff would keep you motivated to stay committed to the treatment despite pain and hardship.

Alcohol Rehab Programs

Once you are through detoxification, the journey of treatment would begin, where you would learn to practice sobriety. If you are a chronic alcoholic, residential rehab program would be the best course to enroll for. As alcoholism can produce severe cravings because of dependence of the body and mind on alcohol, residential rehab program would ensure that you get adequate treatment as well as counseling to end your dependence on it.

In residential rehabs, you would be lucky to receive an alcohol-free environment, where there is no trace of alcohol or intoxicants, to practice sobriety. Further, during your stay at the residential or inpatient rehab, you would be required to stay at a distance from the outside world would remain so that no temptation draws you toward alcohol during your recovery. WATCHING THE SHOW: Mitt Romney, trying to connect

Graphic shows APGfK poll results on presidential candidate favorability

(AP) ? If the presidential election were held today, Romney and Obama would be more or less tied, the latest polls show. But on one voter test, Obama has a clear advantage:

Whom would you rather have a beer with?

Or, if you don't drink (as Romney doesn't), whom would you rather have a cup of coffee with? Or take with you on a road trip (with or without your dog)? Or invite over for dinner?

Simply put, there is a likability gap.

This may seem trivial compared to questions like, say, which candidate you think will better revive the economy or safeguard the nation's nuclear weapons. But election after election has demonstrated that how voters feel about their candidate matters. A lot. It buoyed Ronald Reagan and helped sink John Kerry.

Likability has become a political buzzword that stands for something deeper. More like affinity. Empathy. How well does he or she connect? How much does he understand people like me?

There are Republicans who think this will be the deciding issue for Mitt Romney. He has about as good a playing field as a challenger could hope for, yet has not broken past the president. The election, they believe, may well turn on whether Romney can use this week's convention and the fall debates to really connect with voters in a way he has not yet been able to.

Democrats see this as Obama's core asset. Even in these hard times, voters feel he gets their plight better than the rich guy does. Asked which candidate better understands the problems of people like you, Obama beats Romney among registered voters 51 to 36 percent in the latest AP/GfK poll. Some 53 percent of adults hold a "favorable" opinion of the president, compared with just 44 percent who view Romney favorably.

And that is a president who isn't actually all that touchy-feely himself, having at times been compared to the "Star Trek" alien Mr. Spock, who suppressed emotion in order to solve problems. In fact, Obama's personal ratings are lower than most presidential candidates in recent elections, notes polltaker Andrew Kohut. They are just better than Romney's.

That is Romney's challenge.

___

CAN HE persuade voters to feel comfortable enough with him to turn out Obama? Not just to agree with him on issues but to trust him with their futures? That is why likability is about a lot more than having a beer.

It is about addressing what The Economist, a business-oriented British newsmagazine, editorialized as their "main doubt" about Romney: "Nobody knows who this strange man really is."

One striking element of this long campaign is how little Romney did over years of campaigning to really introduce himself, apparently not wanting to distract from discussion of the weak economy.

But Romney and his campaign were on course to use this convention to "warm up" his image. The candidate and his wife, Ann, sat down with Fox News at their home in New Hampshire the other day.

The correspondent, Chris Wallace, shared their pancakes as Ann described how Mitt had ironed his own shirt just that morning. "I noticed he was doing the laundry last night," she disclosed.

For his part, Romney did what he could to address the issue: "Remember that Popeye line, 'I am what I am and that's all what I am.'" What voters really want, he says, is effective management of the economy and for that he is your man.

In another interview, published by Politico on Monday, Romney acknowledged his likability problem but blamed it on the waves of attack ads Obama and his allies have launched against him (although his personal ratings were low even before the barrage).

He tried to turn the issue around on Obama, calling him a nice guy but a failed president.

In other words, American public, you liked Obama as a candidate but are disappointed in him as a president, while I, Romney, may be disappointing as your candidate but will deliver as your president.

Jon Stewart scoffed when George W. Bush (at that point a teetotaler) was described as a guy you'd love to have a beer with. I don't want a president I can have a beer with, Stewart said, "I want my president to be the designated driver." Given the highway pileup the American economy has just been through, Stewart's quip isn't all that far from Romney's campaign argument.

But can likability or affinity be separated from issues and effectiveness? That is becoming one of the principal questions of this campaign.

The question is sometimes posed as if managing the economy, on which Romney scores better, is different from the personal qualities that Obama scores better on. Some Republicans argue that Obama's personal ratings are all that keep him afloat amid the economic wreckage.

But that misses the point, says one Democratic consultant. Those personal qualities may actually be a way some voters connect politics to their economic facts of life.

"If you are part of the working class and you believe that the deck has been stacked against people like you for a decade or so," this consultant said, "who is likely to be the more 'desirable' remedy for that ? the financial CEO who 'understands' the economy or the guy you think is fighting for people like you?"

Which is why fighting for you is an Obama campaign mantra.

___

IN TRYING to overcome this, Romney is banging into a pretty deep vein of American political feeling. Ever since Andrew Jackson let his supporters traipse mud through the White House, there has been a resistance to letting the patricians back in power.

It took a huge economic crisis for Americans to elect the Hudson valley gentryman, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Herbert Hoover in fact was a good man, just a failed president, which is exactly what Romney is trying to say about Obama.

Romney's team has been planning to use the convention to highlight Obama's failure, as they see it, without denying the president's likability ? and their own candidate's competence, as they see it, while acknowledging the need to humanize him.

This highlights the risk they have taken by waiting until so late in the campaign to try to personalize the candidate. Because Hurricane Isaac has intervened, in more ways than one.

On the obvious level, it has disrupted and overshadowed the convention so far. It has created a conversation about the last Republican administration's handling of a natural disaster when Romney would like to talk about the present Democratic administration's handling of the economy.

But as if to confirm that he is what he is (to channel Popeye again), the hurricane has created the kind of test for Romney that campaigns so often throw at candidates, a sudden change of terrain when the campaign was in the middle of doing something else.

These moments can be opportunities. What better chance to project empathy and connection than a looming threat to life and property? And Romney, Ann at his side, seemed to start out that way. The couple's thoughts, he said, were with the people in the storm's path, and he expressed hope that "they're spared any major destruction."

A more empathic politician might have left it at that, as his running mate, Paul Ryan, did. But Romney kept going, effusive about the convention and how it would go on despite the storm.

"I like my speech. I really like Ann's speech," he said. "Our sons are already in Tampa, and they say it's terrific there ? a lot of great friends. And we're looking forward to a great convention."

Which, if his ear for connecting with people is as tin as it seems to be there, might be somewhat less likely than he hopes.

Foxconn announces $226 million half-year net loss, blames usual suspects

Foxconn announces $226 million halfyear net loss, blames usual suspectsManufacturing behemoth Foxconn (Hon Hai) has announced a record net loss of $226 million on turnover of $2 billion for the first half of the year. Unsurprisingly, it attributed the loss to the European debt crisis, global economic slowdown and its customers "continuous struggle" for market share. While it made a big push to encourage new customers, capacity far outstripped demand. In order to stem the tide, it's relocating some of its Shenzhen-based facilities to sites in Northern China -- and it's also in talks with carriers to become an ODM, building white-label smartphones in the same way that Huawei and ZTE do. While the loss isn't a rosy picture, the company does have nearly $2 billion stashed in the bank, so it shouldn't be worrying too much.

Increase storage space by installing closet or pantry organizers. Replace boring kitchen cabinet knobs with ones that are unique and decorative. While you?re at it, do the same with your plain white wall plates. Enhance your new paint job with fresh, bright curtains and sheers. Rent a floor buffer, and buff and wax your hardwood floors. A little cash and a dash of creativity can result in some dramatic changes.

You have to realize the there is a bigger market for more modern people. Even if you enjoy your old style ovens and refrigerators, you will have to modernize it. Try making everything a similar color like a stainless steel refrigerator and painting your walls a grey or white color.

When thinking about outdoor home improvements, you should take a look at your fence. Many tend to overlook this aspect of our property more often than not, but an addition of a high quality and great looking fence can go a long way towards increasing the value of your back yard and outdoor entertainment areas.

Although it is much less expensive to work on your home yourself, making mistakes or not having the motivation to complete a project can quickly add to the cost. Ray Bradbury: Why NASA named Curiosity landing site after SciFi writer

Ray Bradbury is the new name for the Mars rover landing site in the Gale Crater. NASA chose Ray Bradbury to honor the iconic writer's legacy and dedication to Mars exploration, NASA officials said.

Curiosity's landing site inside Mars' vast Gale Crater was rechristened "Bradbury Landing"? to honor the iconic writer's legacy and dedication to Mars exploration, NASA officials said.

?Ray Bradbury?died in June at age 91. His first book, "The Martian Chronicles," paints a vivid picture of the human exploration of Mars through a series of short stories. The book was published in 1950 and later adapted into a TV series and video game.

"Today would have been Ray Bradbury's 92nd birthday, but he's already reached immortality in his short stories and books," said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program. "His books have truly inspired us. His 'Martian Chronicles' has inspired our curiosity." [More photos of Bradbury Landing on Mars]

The Mars rover Curiosity landed on Aug. 5 inside Gale Crater to determine if the area could have ever supported microbial life. The site of Bradbury Landing is the space contained within the first boxy wheel marks made by Curiosity as it was lowered to the Martian surface by its sky crane descent stage, Meyer said.

Curiosity took its?first test drive on Mars Wednesday, rolling forward, then turning in place and photographing its tracks on the Red Planet.

"I kind of like the name. For one, it was the majority vote by the science team, having been inspired by Ray Bradbury," Meyer added. The name also is a nod to the era of ocean exploration on Earth that took adventurers to many new lands, he added.

?NASA has a long tradition of naming landing sits on Mars after scientists and other icons related to space exploration or the Red Planet.

"Since sending the first rover to Mars in 1997, NASA has made it a tradition to name its landing sites after visionaries and explorers who devoted their lives to expanding our boundaries," said Robert Pearlman, editor of the space history website collectSPACE.com and SPACE.com contributor.

Ten Obscure or Overlooked aspects of IDEA | Special Education ...

1.? Medical Services can be paid for by the School District if it is for diagnostic or evaluation purposes.? As defined in the Individuals with Disabilities Act: ?Medical Services means services provided by a licensed physician to determine a child?s medically related disability that results in the child?s need for special education and related services.?

2.? The Child find mandate requires all children with disabilities residing in the State, including children with disabilities who are homeless children or are wards of the State, and children with disabilities attending private schools, regardless of the severity of their disability, and who are in need of special education and related services, to be identified, located, and evaluated.? The child find mandate also includes children who are suspected of being a child with a disability and in need of special education, even though they are advancing from grade to grade.?

3.? The School District must take steps to provide children with an IEP an equal opportunity to participate in nonacademic and extracurricular services and activities.? This must be accomplished by providing the appropriate support in the form of supplementary aids and services which allows the child ?to be involved in and make progress in the general education curriculum in accordance with subclause (I) and to participate in extracurricular and other nonacademic activities.?

4.? ?Nonacademic and extracurricular services and activities may include counseling services, athletics, transportation, health services, interest recreational activities, special groups or clubs sponsored by the public agency, referrals to agencies that provide assistance to individuals with disabilities, and employment of students, including both employment by the public agency and assistance in making outside employment available.? (Authority: 20 U. S. C.1412(a)(1))

5.? ?The State must ensure that each public agency takes steps to ensure that its children with disabilities have available to them the variety of educational programs and services available to nondisabled children in the area served by the agency, including art, music, industrial arts, consumer and homemaking education, and vocational education.?? (Authority: 20 U. S. C.1412(a)(2), 1413(a)(1))

6.? The School District must ensure that hearing aids worn in school by children with hearing impairments, including deafness, are functioning properly.? The School District must ensure that the external components of surgically implanted medical devices are functioning properly.

7.? The child/student, when appropriate, is a member of the IEP Team.? The student is not only the recipient of the IEP they are also an integral member of the IEP team.? The student should be involved as much as possible in the creation and implementation of the IEP.? Without their buy in, especially in middle school and high school, the less effective the IEP will be.? It takes some additional planning to involve the student but its well worth the additional time to make sure they are willing to put in the necessary effort to implement the IEP.

8.? For those children with a disability parentally-placed in a private school they can be eligible for a services plan.? A services plan is not an IEP. ?IEPs are more comprehensive than services plans developed for parentally placed private school children with disabilities who are designated to receive services.? This is because parentally placed children do not have an individual entitlement to any or all of the services that the children would receive if enrolled in a public school.? A services plan should reflect only the services offered to a parentally placed private school child with a disability designated to receive services.

9.? The United States Department of Education is responsible for awarding at least one grant in each state to establish a Parent Training and Information Center.? According to the Parent Technical Assistance Center Network, Parent Centers help families to:

  • better understand their children?s disabilities and educational, developmental, and transitional needs
  • communicate more effectively with special education, early intervention, and related professionals
  • understand their rights and responsibilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the federal special education law
  • obtain appropriate services for their children through participation in the individualized education program (IEP) and individualized family service plan (IFSP) decision making process
  • resolve disagreements and understand the benefits of alternative methods of dispute resolution
  • connect with other local, state, and national resources that assist children with disabilities

10. The most important part of IDEA is found in the Congressional findings and purposes section.? It is section 1400 of IDEA and I recommend everyone spend a few minutes reading it.? If you don?t read it in its entirety the first part of the purpose of IDEA is:? ?to ensure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living.? ?IDEA is very much about preparation for life not just getting through school and sometimes we all have a hard time remembering that.
